Places on the schedule of the Safari program:
Santa Cruz de Tenerife, is the capital (jointly with Las Palmas) of the Canary Islands. In 2012, the British newspaper “The Guardian” included Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the list of the five best places in the world to live. It shares that distinction with the north coast of Maui, Hawaii; Sankt Pauli district in Hamburg; Cihangir district in Istanbul, and Portland, Oregon in the state (United States). The city is a melting pot of diverse cultures that give it a cosmopolitan character. The largest international communities have immigrated from Latin America, Africa and Western Europe.
San Cristóbal de La Laguna (commonly known as La Laguna) is a city in the northern part of the island of Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, (Spain). La Laguna’s historical centre was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999. The downtown streets are full of monuments and historic buildings, museums and theatres; its streets, its colours, and its environment share elements with colonial South American cities. It also offers a commercial area, where you can buy souvenirs, fashion, Tenerife wines, Canarian craftwork and typical culinary products. It is a city with great university life, so it also offers great nightlife in a fun atmosphere in its countless pubs.
Candelaria is the end of a pilgrimage for people from all the islands every February 2 and August 15. Thousands of people arrive to the feast of the patron. In the Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias, which hosts major festivities of the town, stands the majestic bronze figures representing the nine Menceyes or Guanche kings who ruled the island at the time of the Spanish conquest of 1497.
At the beginning of the 19th century, the environment of Puerto de la Cruz meant that it attracted many researchers and exclusive high-class groups from Europe. At this stage Puerto de la Cruz was a leading cultural center accommodating many travellers and writers, including William Wilde and Alexander von Humboldt.Puerto de la Cruz therefore gained an illustrious reputation in Europe, and when it came to the subsequent advent of modern tourism, the city was at an advantage compared with other tourist sites.
The town of El Médano is located in the southeast coast of the island of Tenerife, known for the trade winds that blow year-round, reshaping sand dunes and coastal relieving summer nights . This quaint village with its promenade, natural beaches and charming landscape is a famous international hotspot for windsurfing and kitesurfing. El Médano attracts lots of international tourism, not only for those who need a relaxing holiday on the beach, but also for many young people who appreciate an active lifestyle as the beautiful year-round weather is ideal for both water and land sports. El Médano’s beautiful promenade invites you to walk to it’s southern edge, where a volcanic cone, the Red Mountain, produces an otherworldly landscape with its reddish colour.
